Mr. Decker was born in
Norfolk and graduated from Maury High School. He was educated at Old Dominion University and The
College of William & Mary. He received his law degree from Marshall-Wythe School of Law at The
College of William & Mary and has practiced law in our community for his entire career of over 45
years. Peter Decker is known and respected as one of the area's finest lawyers. Mr. Decker received
the highest rating from Martindale-Hubbell, and the law firm of Decker, Cardon, Thomas, Weintraub &
Neskis was the Silver Award Winner of the Virginian Pilots "Best Law Firm in 2008" in the city
of Norfolk.
Mr. Decker’s contributions to the community as a lawyer are significant, but they are only part
of the whole picture of who he is. Peter Decker’s commitment to helping people has led him
to serve on many boards and committees on a local, regional and national level, and he has been
recognized time and again for his many contributions. His activities are too numerous to list
here, but no biography of Mr. Decker would be complete without mention of his service to St. Jude
Children’s Research Hospital. For over 35 years, he has been a member of the
hospital’s Board of Governors and Directors, and he is a former National Executive Vice President
in charge of fund raising for St. Jude Hospital. Mr. Decker was elevated to the position of
Director Emeritus of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in 1999.
Mr. Decker served as Chairman of the Virginia State Board of Corrections for seven years, and served on the Virginia State Board of Education for four years. He recently completed his ten- year term as Chairman of the National Maritime Center (Nauticus) in Norfolk, and is presently Chairman of the Norfolk International Airport Authority. His lifelong dedication to the people of our communities was recognized by Norfolk’s Cosmopolitan Club when the members of that prestigious organization named Mr. Decker Norfolk’s First Citizen in 1999.
